The work is based on an unpublished memoir, Bags: Over the Umbrian Moon written by a friend, in which she describes seven years of leading and organising the production of counterfeit designer handbags, sold in the so-called parallel market. The handbag’s production process begins to form the basis for understanding how the female body too, is culturally constructed, following representational conventions. Models of Being an Accessory comprises an eponymous film, an extended essay, photographs, as well as ceramics. The film uses appropriated footage shot by the Italian brands Cooper-van Ingen’s subject and collaborator counterfeited (Prada, Gucci, Fendi) and layers them into the phantasmagorical landscape of intimacy, spectatorship, silence, possession and nature are addressed. Considering the duality of nature and culture as a dominant divisive order and worldview, Petaline aims to offer a space for contemplation on the subtle convergences when beauty and violence, surrender and control, viewer and image meet. Her portraits of women and intimate explorations of the body are often disorienting in how close we are to subjects whose expressions and gestures faintly recall the history of women’s physical and emotional confinement. Thus, the work confronts us with the force of our own imagination and the power of fantasy, whilst acting as a reminder of an all-too-common reality of trespassing. Gita Cooper-van Ingen responds to a series of workbooks by fashion photographer Regina Relang from the 1950s and 60s, currently held in Munich’s Stadtarchiv. Cooper-van Ingen’s work, which spans silkscreen and photographic prints, explores the idea of reproduction itself, utilising the female nude figure as well as the newspaper, to contrast Relang’s clothed, fashioned models. The work re-examines the historical tensions posed by the decorated, contoured female figure whose face remains hidden behind the newspaper’s open spread. Employing different reproductive printing techniques, Cooper-van Ingen translates and transposes Relang’s motif as well as aesthetic, formal aspects of her contact sheets. Ingen has developed an oeuvre primarily composed of photography, film, silkscreen prints, publications, and installations. In her practice, Cooper-van Ingen (re-)engages with the notion of the personal being both political and poetical. Photography is the central framework through which she engages with relationship between images, art making and history, as well as documentation. Incorporating autobiographical elements in her practice has opened up new questions on the complex, fluid nature of authorship and performance in relation to portraiture. Gita Cooper-van Ingen was born in London and was raised in Los Angeles, Munich, Berlin and Rome and now lives and works in The Netherlands. She holds an undergraduate degree in Criticism, Communication, and Curation from Central Saint Martins, London and a postgraduate degree in Photography &amp; Society from the Royal Academy of The Arts (KABK) in The Hague.Gita has worked with various commercial and artist-run initiatives, most recently as Creative Director and Editor at DER GREIF, an organisation for contemporary photography.
